MILLS FAMILY CEMETERY, Lacoochee, Hernando County, Florida
Notes: The Mills Family Cemetery is a fairly “new” cemetery. The first burial in this private family cemetery was in 1957 upon the tragic passing of Amy A. Mills in an automobile accident at nearby Trilby. Many members of the Mills family had been buried in the nearby Lacoochee Cemetery, but the family had made the decision to set aside land among their pasture acreage for a family cemetery. With the passing of Amy A. Mills, the establishment of this cemetery was put into motion. Previously deceased family members were soon re-interred here from the Lacoochee Cemetery. The old style tombstones were moved as well, making this appear as a much older cemetery. The family continues to use this very well maintained cemetery.
The Mills family was an important part of the Kaylon community, as this area was formerly known. The Alderman and Dutton Still communities were also part of this Kaylon area. Turpentine production, along with general agriculture, constituted the area’s economy and there was a stop on the nearby Seaboard Air Line railroad.
